Gavin Dueck (with shovel and wheelbarrow) was one of more than 80 youngsters and parents who took part in a Clean Up Day at the Shaunavon ball diamonds. The event, held Wednesday (April 15), drew a strong turnout under pleasant weather conditions.
“Last year we had a pretty good turnout, but this year it was excellent,” said Shaunavon Wellness and Leisure Director Alexis Hunt. “I think the weather helped, but there also seemed to be a bigger commitment from people to get involved this year. Either way, it was just nice to see so many out helping.”
One coach at the site said he used the event as an off-field training session for his squad, providing a number of benefits, including team building, while also generating a greater appreciation for the work involved in maintaining the diamonds.
Hunt added that the large turnout allowed the group to accomplish more work this year in a relatively short period of time — less than 90 minutes.
During the evening session, the volunteer crew handled a number of duties, from filling gopher holes and grooming infields to installing new bases and collecting garbage.
The effort included work on all four ball diamonds at the Sportsgrounds, as well as the surrounding areas.
The timing of the work proved ideal, as a storm moved in overnight, dumping several inches of heavy, wet snow on the diamonds less than 12 hours later.
Shaunavon Wellness and Leisure thanked all the volunteers, as well as members of the Shaunavon Youth Ball board, for providing help and assistance on Wednesday.
