Shaunavon Standard Local Journalism Initiative Located just off Highway 1 in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan is a quiet little community called Tompkins.
With a population of 152 people, according to the last census, and amenities such as a K-5 school and a senior club, the population remains constant. As Deputy Mayor Patty Sloan notes, “The population stays steady, and it’s a community that has something for everyone, regardless of age.”
Both Deputy Mayor Sloan and Mayor Ethan Wickstrom were asked about their favorite activities in the community, which boasts 12 businesses, including a library, post office, SGI, 9-hole golf course, Pioneer Co-op gas station with a restaurant, and a museum.
Patty Sloan says, “I like to go for coffee often, and if you’re feeling bored, you can always give someone a call to catch up.”
Ethan Wickstrom adds, “In the winter, I spend a lot of time at the skating rink with my kids, and in the summer, we enjoy walking and exploring.”
The skating rink is a popular spot in Tompkins during the winter, featuring a concession stand that operates when the rink is open.
However, it requires funding to maintain, so various fundraisers are organized to support the rink and the village hall.
As Mayor Wickstrom mentions, “The 2025 Mudfling event was more successful than expected, with the funds split between the skating rink and the hall.”
Another upcoming event is the annual steak and lobster fundraiser, scheduled for April 2026.
According to the Mayor, these events are held to “keep our two main centers – the rink and the hall – thriving.”
As the seasons change and summer approaches, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor remind readers that the summers in Tompkins can be busy. The community held a homecoming in 2025, which takes place every five years, attracting people from far and wide who have grown up in or been a part of the village. A ball tournament is also planned for 2026.
Visitors should note that Tompkins has a great campground, perfect for summer getaways, located just a short distance into the village.
As Mayor Wickstrom describes, “It has 26 sites, four of which are full-service, making it a nice, quiet little retreat in town.”
When asked what makes Tompkins so special, Mayor Wickstrom says, “We’re a small, tight-knit community that’s not afraid to lend a helping hand to one another.”
