The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre has organized several unique events and projects in conjunction with Archives Week, which will take place from February 1-7.

Centre staff will be joining the Senior Badgers hockey team’s celebration of 100 years of senior hockey in the community. One of their key efforts is a special exhibit that will be displayed at the VWC rink lobby during the Badger Alumni Game on Saturday, January 31. The exhibit will feature museum archival materials and artifacts related to Shaunavon senior hockey, including, photographs, newspaper articles, team sweaters, and a very special hockey puck.

“It’s been a lot of fun putting this project together, which showcases Senior hockey history,” said Grand Coteau Centre collections manager Kelly Attrell. “The sport has been an important part of Shaunavon’s culture, and I think we’ve gathered a lot of material that people will find interesting, whether they played senior hockey in Shaunavon or not.”

Additionally, a slide presentation of photos taken by Gary Houston at the 2007 Badger Reunion will be playing on the TV in the lobby, and Grand Coteau staff will distribute souvenir postcards to attendees of the alumni game, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

The Grand Coteau Centre will follow this up with a special Coffee & Conversation event at the VWC Greenslade Lounge on Tuesday, February 3.

The conversation will focus on sharing stories and memories of senior hockey in Shaunavon, inspired by the collection of archival material, photographs, trophies, and jerseys, as well as the slide show that will be on display in the Lounge.

“We invite the community to come out and share their stories” said GCHCC Director Joanne Gregoire, “players, fans, coaches, and community members are all welcome to come and join the conversation.”

Coffee and refreshments will be served at the event, which will start at

2 p.m. on February 3. This event will be free and open to the public.

The Archives Week projects developed by the Grand Coteau Centre coincides with the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists’

(SCAA) 25th anniversary. Grant funding from the SCAA helps make these types of events and projects possible.
