The Shaunavon Badgers posted a convincing 8-1 victory over the Assiniboia Rebels before an excellent crowd at the VWC on Feb. 22. The win clinched the Senior C Provincial opening round series two games to one. The Rebels knotted the series on Feb. 21 by blanking the Badgers
6-0 at the Assiniboia Arena. Travis Marit fired the hat trick for the Rebels.
The Badgers meet Craik in round two of Senior C Provincials. Craik eliminated the Wapella Hawks in their first round sreies.
It was the Thomas brothers who sparked the Badgers’ attack in the clinching contest. Derek Thomas fired two goals and two assists while his brother Jordi potted two goals.
D-man Corey Bailey opened the scoring for the Badgers at 1:06 of the first period. Captain Dyson Stevenson, Tanner Tetrault and Treyson Tetrault rounded out the scoring parade.
Tanner Tetrault, Luke Hunter and Tanner Kendall picked up two helpers apiece. Greg Coburn, Brett Stusrud, Kyle Goffinet and Ryden Lingenfelter were credited with single assists.
Marshall Ruzicka notched the lone Rebels’ marker at 7:50 of the middle stanza. Captain Derek Lessmeister picked up the assist.
The period counts were 2-0 and 3-1 before the Badgers’ pumped home five unanswered goals in the final frame.
Darcy French made some clutch stops in backstopping the win while Dalton Dosch was tagged with the loss in the Rebels’ cage.
Referees Scott Kirwan and Brendan Hale assessed one minor infraction to the Badgers in the contest. Arlene Clark of Gull Lake was the lucky winner of $3,145 in the 50/50 draw.
The Badgers drew a first round bye in the Whitemud Hockey League playoffs. The second place Leader Flyers defeated the seventh place Frontier Flyers in the first round. The Eatonia Huskies sidelined the sixth place Maple Creek Hawks in their best-of-three series. The fourth place Cabri Bulldogs eliminated the fifth place Gull Lake Greyhounds inthe other match up.
