Badgers open provincial semi-finals with convincing win

The Shaunavon Badgers opened their second round of Senior “C”

provincials on a winning note. The Badgers posted a 7-2 decision over the Craik Warriors on March 1 before a full house at the VWC. The Badgers were ahead 3-0 and 5-0 at the intermission breaks. The win gives the Badgers an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series Luke Hunter scored on the power play at the 11:00  minute mark of the first period and added second and third period goals to complete the hat trick. Forward Derek Thomas notched a pair of goals including a power play tally. Tyson Goffinet and Ryden Lingenfelter rounded out the scoring parade.

Captain Dyson Stevenson topped the assist derby with a trio of helpers.

J.J. Hunter and Tanner Kendall registered two assists apiece with D-man Greg Coburn and Brett Stusrud collecting solo helpers.

Jonathan Reich fired a pair of third period goals to pace the Warriors.

Noah Bankowski, Conlan Nielson, Alex Barnes and Josh Fitzpatrick were credited on the scoresheet with single assists.

An injury to Shaunavon starting goalie Darcy French forced him out of the game in the second. Backup Janson Davidson came on to complete the contest.

Tyler Peakman guarded the twine for the Warriors and was charged with the loss.

Lyndsay Miyashiro and Brendan Hale of Swift Current whistled eight minors and a pair of 10-minute misconducts to the Warriors. The Badgers cooled their heels in the sin bin with four minors and a double minor for spearing.

Ralph Stollar of Craik took home the $2,620 50/50 cash prize.
