The Shaunavon Ranch Rodeo once again enjoyed ideal conditions on Saturday, July 4, boasting perfect weather, an excellent spectator turnout, a full roster of teams, and crowd-pleasing action.
Twelve teams gathered at the local rodeo grounds to compete in this year’s event, which turned into a tight race from start to finish.
When the dust settled, the Diamond W team claimed the championship buckles with a total of 60 points. The winning squad featured Walker Jacob (Shaunavon), Brandt Jacob (Shaunavon), Clint Christianson (Bracken), and Ross Kruetzer (Maple Creek).
The N4 team secured a second-place finish with 50 points, represented by Lawrence Gareau, Michelle Streeter (Miry Creek), Dirk Neil (Saskatoon), and Klint Kornfeld (Val Marie).
Just behind them in third place was the Harrigan Ranch team with 48 points, consisting of Lindsay Harrigan, Garret Harrigan, Lane Link, and Chris Sanderson, all representing Maple Creek.
The Top Hand of the Day buckle went to Klint Kornfeld of the N 4 team.
The Top Horse award went to Clint Christianson of the Diamond W team.
“We were pleased with the turnout, and the rodeo itself ran quite smoothly,” said Nikolina Jacob, one of the event organizers. “We would like to thank all our sponsors who made the rodeo possible, the contestants who put on the show, all the volunteers who kept things running, and the spectators for coming out to watch everyone play.”
Unlike conventional rodeos, a ranch rodeo features teams of cowboys and cowgirls competing in events modeled directly after the daily operations and chores performed on working ranches. Teams accumulated points in each of six different events that ranged from branding and horse race to wild cow milking and trailer loading.
