Special Sept. 17 performance to benefit local groups by Darkhorse Theatre

The Grand Coteau Heritage and Cultural Centre and South West Chronic Disease Support Inc. have joined forces to bring an  acclaimed performance to the local community as a fundraiser for both groups.

The show, “Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life,”  will be presented at Darkhorse Theatre on Thursday, September 17.

Written and performed by Keith Alessi and directed by Erika Conway, the production is an award-winning, inspirational true story that has celebrated sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Off-Broadway in New York City, and across Canada and the United States.

“We’re thrilled to partner with South West Chronic Disease Support group to bring such a high-calibre performance to our community,” said Joanne Gregoire, Director of the Grand Coteau Centre. “It’s an excellent show that I think area residents are really going to enjoy. Keith Alessi’s story is a powerful reminder of how art and music can help us during our toughest times.”

The moving, humorous performance follows Alessi’s improbable journey from the corporate boardroom  to the theatre stage. As a prominent

Canadian CEO, Alessi’s life shifted instantly when he received a

deadly, life-threatening cancer diagnosis.

The event served as a catalyst for him to abandon the corporate world and embrace a long-deferred passion: learning to play the banjo. Through a circle of musicians, he discovered physical and emotional healing, a testament to the power of music, perseverance, and never giving up.

The production has evolved into a philanthropic movement. Alessi donates

100 per cent of his portion of ticket sales to cancer communities, theatre charities, and artist development.

To date, the performance has raised over $1.4 million globally, a mission Alessi is continuing through the 2026/2027 season.

Local organizers highlight that the performance offers the community a unique opportunity to experience world-class theatre while supporting important local initiatives.

This show is touring the province as part of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils’ performing arts lineup. The event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Western Financial Group, Stark & Marsh, Standard Shaunavon, and Roderick Thienes, with Darkhorse Theatre also contributing to the cause by generously donating their venue space  .
