61 teams for fishing derby at Reid Lake

Great weather and perfect fishing conditions dominated the Shaunavon Wildlife Federation’s annual Reid Lake Walleye Tournament.

The two-day event, held over the July 4–5 weekend, attracted 61 teams and generated positive feedback from everyone involved.

Anglers also competed for a significant cash purse, with $21,380 in total winnings handed out.

The long-running fishing derby has been organized and sponsored by the Shaunavon Wildlife Federation for several decades.

“We had great weather all weekend – beautiful conditions,” said federation member Stu Christensen. “With over 1,300 fish caught and released all weekend, we only had one death. That’s the best track record of any walleye tournament in the province.”

The Eastend team of Nick and Charlie Bidaux claimed the top prize, taking home $6,650. Second place went to Brock Lemay and Wyatt Wilson, while Steve Grubbe and Gavin Conrad hooked the third-place spot.

The Big Fish prize was awarded to Randy Augustin and Matt McCormick for a massive walleye that measured 72.2 cm and weighed nearly 5 kg.

For the third consecutive year, Dr. Chris Somers and the Saskatchewan Sportfish Research Group were on-site to monitor the population. Dr. Somers and his crew successfully tagged 169 walleye during the event.
