SaskEnergy to do flaring at Piapot Compressor station Sept. 22

SaskEnergy will be conducting controlled natural gas flaring at the Piapot Compressor Station located in the RM of Piapot, approximately five kilometres north of the hamlet of Piapot. Flaring will take place from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22. The timing is subject to change based on operating requirements. Please note, this flare was originally scheduled for September 16, however it was postponed due to weather delays.

Residents and drivers in the area may see a large flame being emitted from a 40-foot flare stack temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure at the site.

During this process, a portion of the gas line will be isolated from the system, and natural gas will be removed from the line in a controlled burn called a flare. Flaring is an industry standard practice that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85 per cent compared to venting natural gas into the atmosphere.

The flare is necessary to safely remove natural gas from SaskEnergy’s infrastructure prior to conducting planned maintenance on the natural gas system in the area. Scheduled maintenance on our facilities and infrastructure supports the safe and reliable year-round delivery of natural gas to customers across Saskatchewan.

The area around the flare will be supervised to ensure public safety. Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected. SaskEnergy has notified the RM of Piapot and its Fire Department about this upcoming event.
